GUELPH – After a month-long nominations race featuring two local candidates, Conservative Party members from the Guelph riding elected Dr. Ashish Sachan to be Guelph’s candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada in the 2019 federal election. Over 220 local party members cast a vote at a nominations meeting last night.

Party members had the chance to hear from each candidate before casting their ballots. In a close race, Dr. Sachan edged past Derek Matisz to win the nomination.

“When my family and I chose Canada as our forever home, I never dreamed about a day like today,” said Dr. Ashish Sachan during a victory address to a crowd of supporters. “And tonight, we had a diverse turnout with members from nearly every community in Guelph.”

Dr. Sachan is the Chief Science Officer at a green technology company and has lived in Guelph for the past six years, raising two children with his wife Amita. Born in New Delhi, India, he moved to the United States in 2005 for his graduate studies before making Guelph their permanent home in 2013.

Dr. Sachan completed his Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine and Master’s degree in Veterinary Pharmacology from Veterinary College in Bangalore, India. He received his PhD in Toxicology in 2012 from Iowa State University.

As an active member in the community, Dr. Sachan has been associated with the Guelph-Wellington Local Immigration Partnership Leadership Council since 2015 and serves as the president of the Hindu Society of Guelph. He is also the recipient of a Canada 150 community leader award for demonstrating exceptional leadership and making outstanding contributions to the City of Guelph.

The Conservative Party of Canada’s Guelph Electoral District Association (EDA) congratulates Dr. Sachan on his successful campaign, and thanks both candidates for coming forward as nominees.

“It takes a lot of courage and commitment to put your name forward as a candidate and the Guelph EDA could not be more proud of the two candidates we had during this nomination race,” said Linda Murphy, president of the Guelph EDA for the Conservative Party of Canada. “The caliber of these two candidates shows that the Conservative Party, and the positive vision it has for Canada, is alive and well in Guelph. Ashish’s commitment to his community will not go unnoticed throughout the upcoming campaign.”

The federal election will take place on Monday, October 21, 2019.
