The skilled trades offer in-demand, recognized and well-paid careers. In many skilled trades, apprenticeship training is an essential step to becoming a certified tradesperson.
An apprenticeship usually takes 2-5 years of training and combines on-the-job training with classroom training.
The Government of Canada is working with its partners to increase apprenticeship opportunities for Canadians in the Red Seal trades and to promote a highly skilled and mobile workforce in Canada. Eligible apprentices can get up to $4,000 in federal apprenticeship grants:
- the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) is a taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year or level, up to a maximum amount of $2,000 per person, and
- the Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) is a taxable cash grant of $2,000 for registered apprentices who complete their apprenticeship training and obtain their journeyperson certification in a designated Red Seal trade.
