Has Canada’s Reputation Really Diminished Since Harper Took the Reins?

(Excerpts from a 10/28/2013 post on Huff Post by Kokulan Mahendiran, Political Commentator )

Everyone from the Liberals to the NDP to the Greens has incessantly spread the word about the demise of Canada’s international reputation under consecutive Conservative governments — a political campaign that has been aided and abetted by a vast portion of this country’s media establishment.

However, the evidence points to Canada not only having a stellar international reputation but one of the best in the world.

The following statistics, and many others by various international organizations, demonstrate that Canada has fared better under the current Tory government than it did under previous governments.  A great deal of progress has been made, and the standing of Canada on numerous fronts, including our international reputation, remains irreproachable.

International ReputationThe BBC World Services’ 2013 Country Ratings Poll found that, out of 22 major countries, Canada was the 2nd most favorably viewed.  This finding was based on interviews with more than 26,000 people across 25 countries.

Also in 2013, the Reputation Institute in New York ranked Canada first in international reputation out of 50 countries.  Canada was ranked second in 2009, but has ranked first for the last three years.

Women’s Rights – The Thompson Reuters Foundation ranked Canada the best G20 country for women in 2012 due to its “strong policies against violence and exploitation combined with good access to education and healthcare.”

The Economy – For the sixth straight year, Canada’s financial system was ranked the safest and soundest in the world by the World Economic Forum (September 2013 report).

EducationCanada remains the only country in the world where more than half the population has a tertiary education, leading it to being named the world’s most educated country by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Sustainability – In September 2013, Canada placed sixth best in sustainable energy in a ranking by the World Energy Council.  This is higher than it was ranked the year before.

Best Place To Do Business – According to Forbes, Canada is the best country in the world to do business. Chalk it up to a lower corporate tax rate, excellent infrastructure and a well-educated populace.

Our Air!According to new research, Canada rates tops in air quality. While the U.S. averages 18 micrograms of particulate matter per cubic metre of air, Canada averages only 13 micrograms. That also decreases our risk of developing bad air-induced health conditions like allergies.
